Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad 3.1 /
तृतीयमुण्डके प्रथमः खण्डः

मुण्डकोपनिषद् ३.१

Every word derived from its Dhātupāṭha entry forward, with a rule against each change: markers deleted, augments placed, affixes elided, visarga formed. Any change to a form has a rule beside it.

तृतीयमुण्डके प्रथमः खण्डः — the khaṇḍa in full

The whole of the first khaṇḍa of the third muṇḍaka, in sequence, before anything is taken apart. Six of the ten are analysed word by word further down; the other four are here for context, because the argument runs continuously and the analysed verses are an excerpt from it, not a unit on their own.

द्वा सुपर्णा सयुजा सखायासमानं वृक्षं परिषस्वजाते।तयोरन्यः पिप्पलं स्वाद्वत्तिअनश्नन्नन्यो अभिचाकशीति॥१॥
dvā suparṇā sayujā sakhāyāsamānaṁ vṛkṣaṁ pariṣasvajāte |tayor anyaḥ pippalaṁ svādv attianaśnann anyo abhicākaśīti ||1||

Two fine-winged birds, yoked together, companions, cling to the one tree. One of them eats the sweet fruit; the other, not eating, looks on.

समाने वृक्षे पुरुषो निमग्नोअनीशया शोचति मुह्यमानः।जुष्टं यदा पश्यत्यन्यमीशम्अस्य महिमानमिति वीतशोकः॥२॥
samāne vṛkṣe puruṣo nimagno'nīśayā śocati muhyamānaḥ |juṣṭaṁ yadā paśyaty anyam īśamasya mahimānam iti vītaśokaḥ ||2||

On that same tree the person, sunk down, grieves in his helplessness, bewildered. When he sees the other — the Lord, worshipped — and this, His greatness, his grief departs.

यदा पश्यः पश्यते रुक्मवर्णंकर्तारमीशं पुरुषं ब्रह्मयोनिम्।तदा विद्वान्पुण्यपापे विधूयनिरञ्जनः परमं साम्यमुपैति॥३॥
yadā paśyaḥ paśyate rukmavarṇaṁkartāram īśaṁ puruṣaṁ brahmayonim |tadā vidvān puṇyapāpe vidhūyanirañjanaḥ paramaṁ sāmyam upaiti ||3||

When the seer sees the golden-hued one — maker, Lord, Person, source of Brahmā — then, knowing, shaking off merit and demerit, unstained, he reaches the highest identity.

प्राणो ह्येष यः सर्वभूतैर्विभातिविजानन् विद्वान् भवते नातिवादी।आत्मक्रीड आत्मरतिः क्रियावान्एष ब्रह्मविदां वरिष्ठः॥४॥
prāṇo hy eṣa yaḥ sarvabhūtair vibhātivijānan vidvān bhavate nātivādī |ātmakrīḍa ātmaratiḥ kriyāvāneṣa brahmavidāṁ variṣṭhaḥ ||4||

This is the breath that shines forth through all beings. Knowing it, the wise no longer speak in excess — at play in the Self, delighting in the Self, and active: he is the first among knowers of Brahman.

विभाति again, as in 3.1.7 — and again of the Self. The verb is becoming a refrain by this point in the khaṇḍa.

3.1.5context only
सत्येन लभ्यस्तपसा ह्येष आत्मासम्यग्ज्ञानेन ब्रह्मचर्येण नित्यम्।अन्तःशरीरे ज्योतिर्मयो हि शुभ्रोयं पश्यन्ति यतयः क्षीणदोषाः॥५॥

By truth is this Self won, and by austerity, by right knowledge, by continence constantly kept. Within the body he is, made of light, radiant — whom the ascetics see, their faults worn away.

Worth setting beside 3.1.8, which denies that तपसा reaches it. Here तपसा is among the means. The two are not necessarily in conflict — Śaṅkara reads 3.1.8 as denying austerity as the direct instrument of seeing — but a class should be shown the tension rather than have it smoothed over.

3.1.6context only
सत्यमेव जयते नानृतंसत्येन पन्था विततो देवयानः।येनाक्रमन्त्यृषयो ह्याप्तकामायत्र तत्सत्यस्य परमं निधानम्॥६॥
satyam eva jayate nānṛtaṁsatyena panthā vitato devayānaḥ |yenākramanty ṛṣayo hy āptakāmāyatra tat satyasya paramaṁ nidhānam ||6||

Truth alone prevails, not falsehood. By truth is the path of the gods laid open, by which the seers, their desires already fulfilled, ascend to where truth has its highest treasure.

सत्यमेव जयते is the national motto of India, taken from this verse. Note that जयते is again ātmanepada where the classical language would want जयति — the same ārṣa licence as पश्यते in 3.1.3 and 3.1.8, and a third instance within one khaṇḍa.

बृह॑च्च तद्दि॒व्यमचि॑न्त्यरूपंसू॒क्ष्माच्च॑ तत्सू॒क्ष्मत॑रं विभाति।दू॒रात्सु॑दूरे त॒दिहा॑न्तिके चप॒श्य॑त्स्विहैव निहितं॑ गुहायाम्॥७॥
bṛhac ca tad divyam acintyarūpaṁsūkṣmāc ca tat sūkṣmataraṁ vibhāti |dūrāt sudūre tad ihāntike capaśyatsv ihaiva nihitaṁ guhāyām ||7||

That is vast and self-luminous; its form is beyond thought. It shines subtler than the subtle. It is farther than the far, and it is here, close at hand — set down, for those with eyes to see, right here, in the cave.

न चक्षु॑षा गृ॒ह्यते॒ नापि॑ वाचाना॒न्यैर्दे॒वैस्तप॑सा॒ कर्म॑णा वा।ज्ञान॑प्रसादेन वि॒शुद्ध॑सत्त्व-स्त॒तस्तु॑ तं प॒श्यते॒ निष्क॑लं ध्यायमानः॥८॥

It is not grasped by the eye, nor by speech, nor by the other faculties, nor by austerity or ritual action. When one's inner being has been clarified by the serenity of knowledge, then, in meditation, one sees that partless One.

एषोऽणुरात्मा चेतसा वेदितव्योयस्मिन्प्राणः पञ्चधा संविवेश।प्राणैश्चित्तं सर्वमोतं प्रजानांयस्मिन्विशुद्धे विभवत्येष आत्मा॥९॥

This Self is subtle, and is to be known by the mind — the mind into which the breath has entered fivefold. The whole thinking of creatures is woven through by the breaths; when it is purified, this Self shines forth.

3.1.10context only
यं यं लोकं मनसा संविभातिविशुद्धसत्त्वः कामयते यांश्च कामान्।तं तं लोकं जयते तांश्च कामान्तस्मादात्मज्ञं ह्यर्चयेत् भूतिकामः॥१०॥

Whatever world one of purified being holds in mind, and whatever desires he desires — that world he wins, and those desires. Therefore let whoever seeks welfare honour the one who knows the Self.

विशुद्धसत्त्वः returns from 3.1.8, and संविभाति couples सम् to the same √भा. The khaṇḍa closes on the vocabulary it opened the argument with.

3.1.7 and 3.1.8 are given with their Vedic accents. The rest are unaccented — see the editor queries. Verses 3.1.4, 3.1.5, 3.1.6 and 3.1.10 were transcribed from a recitation edition that marks word junctures and nasals inline (समानं-वृँक्ष-म्परिषस्वजाते); they have been normalised to the orthography used throughout this module, and should be checked against the course's own edition before printing.

How to use this

Start at the root

Every verbal word opens with its Dhātupāṭha entry — root as taught, gaṇa, pada, seṭ or aniṭ. The derivation begins there, not half way.

Watch what changed

Each step highlights the part of the form that differs from the step above it. If a mark appears or vanishes, you can see exactly where — and the rule for it sits alongside.

Search anything

Press / and type a word, a root, a gloss, or a sūtra number such as 6.1.87 to find every word that uses it.

Follow a thread

Eleven rules do most of the work across these verses. Pick one below to see which words turn on it.

Where a point is open

Some readings are disputed between editions or unsettled in the commentaries. Those carry a note on the card and are gathered under open questions.

सयुजा सखाया द्वा सुपर्णा समानं वृक्षं परिषस्वजाते । तयोः अन्यः स्वादु पिप्पलम् अत्ति; अन्यः अनश्नन् अभिचाकशीति ॥

Reading the verse

Ṛgveda 1.164.20 verbatim, and the frame for everything that follows. The second bird — the one that does not eat — is the subject of 3.1.7–9. Read the later verses without this one and तत् has no antecedent.

अन्यः + अभिचाकशीतिअन्यो अभिचाकशीतिअतो रोरप्लुतादप्लुतेआद्गुणःP.6.1.113P.6.1.87Vedic: the following अ is preserved rather than elided — contrast एषोऽणुः in 3.1.9

In classical Sanskrit ओ + अ gives ओऽ with avagraha, as at एषोऽणुः in 3.1.9. Here the अ of अभिचाकशीति stands open. Vedic texts frequently decline the elision, and printed editions differ; this is a place to show students that sandhi is a convention of transmission as much as a rule of the language.

Reading the verse

The turn from the first bird to the second, and the model for 3.1.8: a condition of failure, then a seeing that ends it. Note that seeing is again the operative verb, and again it is the other that is seen.

Reading the verse

The verse that supplies the corroboration for पश्यते at 3.1.8. It also supplies the vocabulary 3.1.7–9 will strip away: here the Self is named with five epithets, there with none — only तत्.

Reading the verse

Six predications about a subject never named — only pointed at with तत्. Each pair cancels the last: vast but subtler than the subtle, far but near. The final line resolves the paradox by locating it: not out there, but guhāyām.

Lines 7–8 are the ones to dwell on. Read quickly, the stretch looks like पश्यत् / स्विहैव — but स्वि- is not a word. Undo the two sandhis in order and the padas fall out cleanly as पश्यत्सु + इह + एव: a locative plural, not a nominative singular.

Reading the verse

The answer to 3.1.8. Having ruled out eye, speech, senses, austerity and ritual, the text now names the one instrument that works — चेतसा — and immediately explains why it usually does not: it is woven through with the breaths. The condition is not a different faculty but the same one, clarified.

Reading the accent

Two of this module's grammatical arguments rest on the accent marks in the printed text — the compound type of अचि॑न्त्यरूपम् and वि॒शुद्ध॑सत्त्वः is settled by where the udātta falls. That is only an argument if you can read the marks. Here is the system.

उदात्त
high
unmarked, or inferred

The raised pitch. In the standard printed convention it carries no mark of its own — you locate it by finding the syllable before a marked svarita, or by the anudātta marks around it. This is the commonest source of confusion.

अनुदात्त
low
a horizontal stroke below the syllable ( ॒ )

The lowered pitch. Everything not udātta or svarita is anudātta by अनुदात्तं पदमेकवर्जम् (P.6.1.158) — in a pada, all syllables but one are low.

स्वरित
falling
a vertical stroke above the syllable ( ॑ )

A contour tone, high falling to low. It arises automatically on the syllable following an udātta — उदात्तादनुदात्तस्य स्वरितः (P.8.4.66) — which is why a marked svarita is a pointer backwards to the accented syllable.

Practical rule for reading this text: find the ॑ mark, then look one syllable to its left. That syllable carries the udātta. In बृह॑त् the ॑ sits on -ह-, so the accent is on बृ-. In अचि॑न्त्यरूपम् it sits on -चि-, so the accent is on अ- — the first syllable of the prior member, exactly as a bahuvrīhi requires.

The accent sūtras

P.6.1.158अनुदात्तं पदमेकवर्जम्One syllable of a pada is accented; all the rest are anudātta. Accent is a property of the word, not of each syllable.
P.6.1.159कर्षात्वतो घञोऽन्त उदात्तःA घञ् derivative is end-accented — relevant to प्रसाद and प्राण in this module.
P.6.2.1बहुव्रीहौ प्रकृत्या पूर्वपदम्In a bahuvrīhi the prior member keeps the accent it had on its own. The diagnostic used twice in these verses.
P.6.1.223समासस्यThe default for a compound is end-accent — which is what P.6.2.1 overrides, and why the bahuvrīhi test works.
P.8.4.66उदात्तादनुदात्तस्य स्वरितःAn anudātta following an udātta becomes svarita. The rule that makes the ॑ mark a backward pointer.
P.3.1.3आद्युदात्तश्चAn affix is by default first-syllable accented — which is why anubandhas like the प् of तरप् and the ल् of तसिल् matter even after they are deleted.

Anubandhas and accent are the same subject. A पित् affix is anudātta (P.3.1.4), a ञित् or नित् affix is first-accented (P.6.1.197), a लित् affix accents the syllable before it (P.6.1.193). Every one of those markers is deleted by P.1.3.9 long before the word is finished — and every one of them leaves its trace in the pitch. The इत् thread and the accent thread are two views of one mechanism.

Paradigms

Hand-checked against the standard paradigms rather than generated, and worth a second pair of eyes before class. The point of printing them is not reference — students have Kale for that — but placement: each table shows the form that occurs in these verses inside the system it belongs to, so that चक्षुषा stops being a fact to memorise and becomes a consequence.

dat.तस्मैताभ्याम्तेभ्यः
abl.तस्मात्ताभ्याम्तेभ्यः
gen.तस्यतयोःतेषाम्
loc.तस्मिन्तयोःतेषु

तत् in 3.1.7. Compare the masculine below: the neuter nominative escapes both त्यदादीनामः and तदोः सः because the सु is elided by लुक् and P.1.1.63 withholds प्रत्ययलक्षणम्.

तद् (masculine)

that — pronoun, masculine

singulardualplural
नom.सःतौते
acc.तम्तौतान्
inst.तेनताभ्याम्तैः
dat.तस्मैताभ्याम्तेभ्यः
abl.तस्मात्ताभ्याम्तेभ्यः
gen.तस्यतयोःतेषाम्
loc.तस्मिन्तयोःतेषु

तम् in 3.1.8. Note सः against neuter तत् — the whole difference is P.1.1.63, and यस्मिन् in 3.1.9 follows this pattern exactly with य- for त-.

चक्षुस्

eye — neuter अस्/उस्-stem

singulardualplural
नom.चक्षुःचक्षुषीचक्षूंषि

abl.चक्षुषःचक्षुर्भ्याम्चक्षुर्भ्यः
gen.चक्षुषःचक्षुषोःचक्षुषाम्
loc.चक्षुषिचक्षुषोःचक्षुःषु

चक्षुषा in 3.1.8. The ष् appears wherever the स् stands after उ and before a vowel or voiced sound (P.8.3.59). Set this beside तपस् below — same shape, different vowel, different outcome throughout.

तपस्

austerity — neuter अस्-stem

singulardualplural
नom.तपःतपसीतपांसि
acc.तपःतपसीतपांसि
inst.तपसातपोभ्याम्तपोभिः

abl.तपसःतपोभ्याम्तपोभ्यः
gen.तपसःतपसोःतपसाम्
loc.तपसितपसोःतपःसु

तपसा in 3.1.8; चेतस् in 3.1.9 declines identically. Every form keeps स्, because the preceding vowel is अ, which is outside इण्. Set against चक्षुस् above, the pair isolates the one conditioning factor.

पश्यत्

seeing — शतृ participle, masculine

singulardualplural
नom.पश्यन्पश्यन्तौपश्यन्तः
acc.पश्यन्तम्पश्यन्तौपश्यतः
inst.पश्यतापश्यद्भ्याम्पश्यद्भिः

abl.पश्यतःपश्यद्भ्याम्पश्यद्भ्यः
gen.पश्यतःपश्यतोःपश्यताम्
loc.पश्यतिपश्यतोःपश्यत्सु

पश्यत्सु in 3.1.7. नुम् is inserted only before a सर्वनामस्थान affix (P.7.1.70) — which is why the nominative plural is पश्यन्तः but the locative plural is पश्यत्सु, with no nasal.

Open questions

Points that are unsettled, disputed between editions, or that need checking against the text the course uses.

Accents for the unaccented verses

3.1.7 and 3.1.8 are set with their Vedic accents; the rest are not. The udātta and anudātta placement should be supplied from a single accented edition rather than reconstructed. Two arguments in this module — the compound type of अचि॑न्त्यरूपम् and वि॒शुद्ध॑सत्त्वः — turn on the accent, and would gain further instances if the other verses were marked.

Uṇādi numbering

Editions number the Uṇādi sūtras differently. The three cited here (2.57, 2.84, 2.119) follow one common numbering and should be checked against the edition in use. They are also the only rules in this module that could not be checked against a machine-readable text.

Taddhita sūtra for दिव्य

दिव् + य is uncontroversial as a formation, but the licensing sūtra should be filled in from the भवार्थ taddhitas (P.4.3.53 ff.). Left open rather than guessed at: an invented rule number would be worse than a visible gap.

Which बृहत्?

DP 1.771 gives बृहिँ वृद्धौ, which is इदित् and therefore takes नुम् — so the derivation has to account for a nasal that the finished word does not show. Several editions also carry a non-इदित् बृहँ, from which बृहत् derives with no nasal at any point. The card presents both; the course should settle which root it teaches from.

Ballantyne numbers

Where a rule has a familiar number in Ballantyne's Laghu Siddhānta Kaumudī, it is given alongside the Pāṇini reference. The coverage is partial; completing it would help students working from that text.

Translations

The English renderings are original to this module, so it can be distributed without a permissions question. Where a published translation is preferred, it will need attribution and, for a public course, a licence.

House style for the notes

Notes state findings flat and neutral: no praise of the reader, no superlatives about how useful a point is, no manufactured drama, and none of the intensifiers that inflate without adding. If a contrast is worth teaching, showing it is the argument. Please keep additions to the same standard.

Exercises

3.1.7

  1. Restore the pada-pāṭha of line 4 from the saṃhitā text, naming the rule at each juncture. There are three.
  2. बृहत् and दिव्यम् are both neuter nominative singulars, yet one ends in a consonant and the other in -म्. Explain, citing two rules.
  3. Why is the accent on अचि॑न्त्यरूपम् evidence about the compound? What would a tatpuruṣa look like?
  4. Give the ablative singular of सूक्ष्म, दूर and गुहा. Which one does not use आत्, and why?

3.1.8

  1. चक्षुषा and तपसा are both instrumental singulars of neuter -अस् stems. Account for the ष् in one and the स् in the other in a single sentence.
  2. Derive गृह्यते from √ग्रहँ, marking the step at which सम्प्रसारण applies. Then explain why वाचा shows no सम्प्रसारण although √वच् normally takes it.
  3. कर्मणा has ण्; ज्ञानप्रसादेन has न्. Both contain र्. What is the difference?
  4. पश्यते rather than पश्यति: what kind of form is this, and what licenses it? Find the other occurrence in this khaṇḍa.

3.1.9

  1. एषोऽणुः and एष आत्मा contain the same word in the same case. Derive both sandhis and state the single factor that separates them.
  2. Identify the antecedent of each यस्मिन्. Defend your choice for the first; it is open.
  3. प्राणः has ण्, प्रजानाम् has न्. Both begin with प्र-. Explain.
  4. विभाति (3.1.7) and विभवति (3.1.9) — different roots, different classes. Derive both as far as the finite form and mark where they diverge.
  5. ओतम् and गृह्यते both show सम्प्रसारण. Are they the same rule? Cite it.

Across all three

  1. बृहत् acquires a nasal at step 6 and loses it at step 8. Name the rule for each. If you cannot name the second, say why not — the answer is part of the exercise.
  2. Both बृहत् and पश्यत्सु involve the augment नुम्. In one it is added, in the other it is withheld. Give the rule in each case.
  3. चेतसा and चित्तम् come from one root in one verse, yet one has चे- and the other चि-. Account for the difference by a single property of the affix.
  4. Find three words in the module where an इत् is deleted but still determines a later step. Name the इत्, the rule deleting it, and the rule it conditioned.

इत्A marker attached to a root or affix in its taught form, deleted before use (P.1.3.9) but conditioning rules while present
निपातनA rule that states a finished form outright, thereby licensing whatever irregularity it contains

Practice — name the rule

Eighteen transitions drawn automatically from the derivations above, one per distinct rule, in fixed random order. Each shows a form before and after; name the sūtra that did it. Because these are generated from the same data as the ladders, they cannot drift out of step with the content.

वे + क्तवे + त
लशक्वतद्धिते · तस्य लोपःP.1.3.8P.1.3.9

The क् of क्त is an इत् and drops. Being कित्, it licenses the next step.

The त् or द् of तद्/एतद् — when not final — is replaced by स् before सु.

ज्ञानषदॢँ → सद्
धात्वादेः षः सः · उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् · तस्य लोपःP.6.1.64P.1.3.2P.1.3.9

विशुद्धसत्त्वर्विशुद्धसत्त्वः
खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयःP.8.3.15

Pada-final र् becomes visarga before a खर् sound or at a pause.

सम् + विवेशसंविवेश

Pada-final म् becomes anusvāra before a consonant.

प्राण + सुँप्राण + स्
उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् · तस्य लोपःP.1.3.2P.1.3.9

The उँ of सुँ is a nasalised vowel in upadeśa, hence an इत्, and is elided. Only स् remains.

पश्य + स्पश्यर्
ससजुषो रुःP.8.2.66

Pada-final स् is replaced by रुँ; the उँ is an इत् and drops at once, leaving र्.

सूक्ष्म + तरप्सूक्ष्म + तर
हलन्त्यम् · तस्य लोपःP.1.3.3P.1.3.9

The final प् of तरप् is an इत् and is elided. It is not idle either: a पित् affix is anudātta, which is why the accent sits where it does. → सूक्ष्मतर.

ज्ञानप्रसाद + इनज्ञानप्रसादेन
आद्गुणःP.6.1.87

अ + इ: guṇa ए replaces both. → ज्ञानप्रसादेन, with न् and not ण् — see the note.

चित् + अस्चेतस्
पुगन्तलघूपधस्य चP.7.3.86

guṇa of the light penultimate इ before the ārdhadhātuka affix: इ → ए. Note it is this rule and not सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः (P.7.3.84), which requires the aṅga to end in an इक् vowel — चित् ends in त्. → चेतस्.
